This week we are finishing ISAT Testing-hoping to be done by Friday morning with regular testing and makeups. Our building is also preparing for the final 2 weeks of school prior to spring break.

Good morning Spring Trail Families,

Happy Tuesday! As many of you know, ISAT Testing has arrived across the state of Illinois. Our school's students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be testing this week and next.
While testing is going on, other things are also happening around our school. This evening is our monthly PTO Meeting and our PTO's Bowling Event is this Saturday! Students are also involved in classroom activities outside of ISATs, continuing to focus on Reading and Mathematics development.

Just wanted to remind everyone that students will not attend school tomorrow. Tomorrow is our annual County-Wide Teacher Institute Day. Many of our teachers are receiving training regarding reading strategies and how to differentiate instruction in the classroom.

Enjoy the weekend and don't forget that Sunday is the NASCAR Race from Las Vegas and Monday is the first day of ISAT testing for our 3rd-6th graders.

School Improvement Day

Greetings Spring Trail Bucket Fillers,
I hope our students are enjoying a day away from school-working on Reading and Mathematics and filling buckets whenever possible.
Our teachers are hard at work today planning ways to improve our student's learning for the rest of this year and the future.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend. I am still training for the upcoming Chicago Marathon-one week from Sunday.

PTO Meeting/McDonald's Family Night

Happy Friday.
Just wanted to announce that Spring Trail will be hosting a McDonald's Family night on Tuesday, September 15th. As you all know, McDonald's night is a chance for our community to gather and share a meal while raising money for the Spring Trail Literacy Fund. This fund was used to purchase books for every one of our students as they returned to school this year. The goal for next year is to purchase two books and have them mailed home in early August.

Please look for the McDonald's slip coming home on Monday. Extras will be available at the resturaunt.
Watch for me making ice cream cones and sundaes that evening!

Thursday at Spring Trail

Happy Thursday Spring Trail.

Today was a fantastic day! We started with a Parent Breakfast and talked about ways to improve our school.
There were over 80 Bucket Filler Referrals to the office this afternoon!
We also enjoyed a beautiful day.

Tomorrow is College Day at Spring Trail so encourage your student to wear the shirt from a favorite college team or sports team!

Happy Tuesday Spring Trail Family,

Looking back on the past three days I realize how lucky we all were to have beautiful weather for outdoor activites. The Schroeder Family spent Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin, shopping the Farmer's Market for fresh produce and baked goods. Sunday and Monday were spent watching NASCAR, running in prepartion for the Marathon, and cleaning the house to prepare for Reagan's birthday party.

I hope you all received my message about our "Have You Filled a Bucket Today" book sale. We are also proud to be hosting a Breakfast with the Principal on Thursday morning at 8:30.

Happy American Education Week!
I wanted to remind you all of a couple of events coming up in the next few days.
1. No Cook Night at Oberweis-a night of fun and ice cream this Friday.
2. Our second and fifth grades will have a Native American speaker on Friday.
3. Conferences are still going on with teachers-we will finish the conference schedule on Tuesday of next week.
4. Our Thanksgiving Break begins on Friday. Students will be home until December 1st.
5. Dads and donuts was a huge success. Thank you to all that participated. We will be scheduling Moms and Muffins during the Spring Book Fair.

1. The Fall Book Fair is underway with evening shopping next week on Wednesday and Thursday.
2. Dads and Donuts is on Thursday morning from 7:30 to 8:20.
3. We are off of school for Veteran's Day on Tuesday.
4. We have a No Cook Night at Rocco Vino's all day on Wednesday!
5. American Education Week is next week.

As I look out my window I can see the rain falling-Fall is quickly approaching.
Yet, with the change of season comes the Spring Trail Bookfair!
Next Thursday morning, I'm inviting all of the Spring Trail students and dads to join me for a morning of donuts, juice, milk, and coffee. The cost is only $1 and you will be able to shop in the Bookfair after eating your donut in the Commons.

Election Day

Good Morning-Happy November 5th.

As you all know, yesterday was Election Day for our nation and our Spring Trail Community. Students were able to cast their ballots in our Library for the Presidential Election and the results mirrored our national results.
Yesterday truly was a historic day in our nation. As I walked around the school and visited classrooms prior to the election, it was fantastic to see and hear students talking about the election. Not only were they discussing candidates, but they were interested in issues such as education, taxes, and the War in Iraq. Thank you to everyone that helped facilitate this process.

On another note, please check the PTO website for an update regarding their Fall Lottery and other important information.

Spring Trail 6th Grade Families,

I am posting this message from the Eastview PTE.

Eastview Middle School would like to thank the 90+ parents who attended our PTE meeting in April. We also want to thank all of those who signed up to help for next school year. Many of these committees need to be in place at the start of the school year so that all events can run smoothly. WE NEED YOU!!!!!!
1 .Help at registration: if you are available on August 14 or 19th morning or afternoon please call the Eastview office and let Bonnie Corn know you would like to help.
2. Help with the committee for school magnets.
3. Help with a Spirit Wear committee.
4. Help in attaining advertisements from local businesses for the school directory and in putting together the school directory.
5. Help with being a chaperone for school dances.
6. Help with the "Big Party" after school in November.
7. Help on the First Day of School from 8:30am-9:15am – so new students can work their lock, and get through the halls.

Fifth Grade field trip to see "Freedom Train" on Wednesday.
6th Grade Band students play at the Kane Co. Cougars Game on Thursday.

April 15th-No Cook Night at Spring Trial.
The Dogfather Comes to our Commons for an in-house No-Cook Night. The Food and Festivities begin at 5pm and last until 7pm!
Proceeds will benefit the Spring Trail Technology Fund.

PTO Meeting on April 15th at 7pm-following the No-Cook Event.

ISAT Comes to Spring Trail

Spring Trail Families,
ISAT Tests begin for students in Grades 3-6 on Monday, March 3rd. The tests continue until March 14th.
Please be sure your student is prepared for the testing by having them get a good night sleep and make sure they are to school on time. A good and balanced breakfast is also very important for the students.

If you have any questions about the testing please call our school's front office or your child's teacher.

Spring Trail's Kindergarten Students would like to say thank you to the Carol Stream Jewel-Osco for the donation of green reusable shopping bags. Jewel donated 70 bags, which will be given to our kindergarten families on February 20th. The goal is for our kindergarten families to used these bags and reduce the amount of plastic used in our community.

Once again, thank you to Jewel and our kindergarten family for embarking on this fantastic program!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend-President's Day is always a fantastic day to celebrate with children. The Daytona 500 was an exciting event for the Schroeder Household, although my son was a bit sad that Jimmy Johnson did not finish in the top ten.

Things at Spring Trail are a bit quiet this week. We will be hosting our first Battle of the Books match on Wed. after school against Wayne.
A few of our teachers will be attending U-46 staff development days this week and next and I will be attending recruiting fairs during the next few weeks for the district.

Book Fair Shopping

Tomorrow evening, Thursday, February 14, is the final night of our Book Fair! This is your last chance to purchase books as the Book Fair will be packed up and shipped back on Friday morning. Miss Bailey's class will have the last opportunity to shop at the Book Fair during their scheduled time on Friday morning. After that, no more purchases will be accepted. Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, February 13, is the Book Fair Family Event from 4-7 PM . Community members and former teachers will be our guest Mystery Readers from 5-7 PM! Our teachers have made Wish Lists for their classroom libraries. Please support them by choosing a book from their Wish List with your student. These purchases can be made at anytime during our Book Fair.

When you shop with your child Tuesday night, you may purchase your items using cash, checks or credit cards. Try your luck and guess how many items are in our Counting Jar. The closest guess will win a $5.00 book . Please join us for a fun filled night of reading and stories.

Tomorrow night our school will be hosting a Family Reading Night. The event will last from 6:30 until 8pm and will feature books by Jim Aylesworth read aloud in our classrooms. At 7:30 we will all meet in the commons for milk and cookies-please bring a package of your favorite cookies to share-milk will be provided! All families are encouraged to attend and students may wear their favorite pajamas to the event!

This evening the PTO will be hosting the first Fun Fair Planning Meeting at 7pm in our library.Feel free to come and help plan this important and exciting event.

A Happy Thursday-Kitchen Sink Bars

Good Morning Spring Trail.
Happy Tuesday.
The Recipe for the day is Mr. Schroeder's Kitchen Sink Bars.

Ingredients:
2 sticks of melted butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 cup white chocolate chips
1/2 cup coconut

Directions:
1. Cream butter, sugars, and eggs. Add dry ingredients (flour, powder, soda). Mix.
2. Add the chips and the coconut.
3. Pour into a 9 x 13 pan sprayed with cooking spray.
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
5. Let cool. Cut into squares.

Enjoy.

Mr. Schroeder's Magic Bars

Here is the delicious recipe for Magic Bars. These are truly a family favorite!

Ingredients:

2 cups graham cracker crumbs.

1 cup white sugar

1/2 stick melted butter

1 can sweetened condensed milk

1 bag of chocolate chips

1 cup M+M's

1 cup of coconut

Directions:

1. Mix graham cracker crumbs and white sugar. Add melted butter. Spray 9x13 metal pan and pour mixture into bottom. Press down the crumb mixture to make crust.

2. Open can of milk and pour over crust. Even out with a knife so it coats the entire crust.

3. Pour bag of chips over the milk mixture. Make sure they are evenly spread over the entire pan. You can also use white chocolate, butterscotch, or any other type of chips for this step. Next, add the M+M's over the top.

4. Take coconut and spread over the chips.

5. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. Coconut will look toasted when it is done!

6. Let cool to room temp., cut and enjoy!

Winter Sing DVD For Sale!

The 2007 Winter Sing is now available on DVD! We are currently taking orders for the DVD with delivery next week before Winter Break.
The cost of each copy is $5.00, which covers production and equipment costs. Orders should be submitted to the front office.

The Fall Musical, "The King and I", is also available on DVD. The cost is $5.oo.
Orders for this DVD should be sent to the front office.

Mr. Schroeder's Fantastic Fudge!

Here it is. The directions for making my fantastic fudge!

Ingredients:
1 bag of White Chocolate Chips
1 can of Vanilla frosting
10 Oreo Cookies-crushed
1 cup of holiday M+M's

Directions:
Melt the White Chips in a pan on low heat-stir until melted completely.
Heat canister of frosting in microwave for 30 seconds.
Combine melted chips and frosting-stir. Stir in crushed Oreos and M+Ms.
Pour into an 8x8 pan that is sprayed with cooking spray.
Place in fridge until firm-about an hour.
Cut and enjoy!

Safe Program Survey

Spring Trail Families,

Spring Trail has distributed a survey to measure interest in establishing a SAFE Program at our school. The details of the program are as follows:

Before and After school care.
Staffed by teachers and assistants with a maximum ratio of 12:1.
Begins at 6:30 am.
Runs after school until 6 pm.
It is currently offered in 21 of the U-46 schools.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the program. This program would take the place of the current Park District Program for the 2008-2009 School Year. Please return your survey by December 21 if you are interested in participating in the SAFE Program.

The event will be held at the McDonald's at County Farm and Army Trail Roads. 20% of every Spring Trail order will be donated back to our school to support new technology. Our last two events were able to raise over $500 toward the purchase of a new color laser printer!

Halloween at Spring Trail

The annual Halloween Parade will be tomorrow at 1pm. All students in first through fourth grades will change into their costumes at school before the parade. Kindergarten students will come to school dressed in costume and the morning class is invited to participate in the afternoon parade. Parking will be available in the back lot of the school. Please be sure that your student's costume is school appropriate as items such as weapons and fake blood will not be allowed.
We look forward to seeing everyone here tomorrow to celebrate Halloween.

Middle School Review Process

Below is a communication from the U-46 Central Office. I have been asked to post the message in order to keep parents aware of the Middle School Review Process.

Middle School Review Update
In an effort to keep all of our stakeholders updated on the progress of the U-46 middle school review project, communications will occur on a regular basis. Communication will consist of e-mails, newsletter announcements, the U-46 website and WEPS radio.
Goals of the Middle School Review
Review current literature and research on highly effective middle schools .
Research current practice in U-46 middle schools.
Conduct a comparative analysis of current practice with best practice.
Prepare a report that will include the findings, an analysis of all data and the work that needs to be done.
Middle School Review Process
The ECRA Educational Research Group will facilitate the data gathering, provide an analysis of the data, facilitate discussions with the middle school review committee and prepare a final report.
The middle school review committee will meet throughout the year to discuss implications of initial analyses of the data.
Data will include but not be limited to focus group input, a literature review and an analysis of student achievement data.
The timeline for the project is October, 2007 through April, 2008.
Middle School Review Committee
Consists of a broad cross-section of stakeholders, which will include teachers of all curricular areas, parents, administrators and representatives from elementary, middle and high schools as well as Instructional Council.
Update on Activities between October 15 and October 19, 2007.
To date, aside from the planning process, The ECRA Group has conducted a focus group with the middle school principals and the middle school review team. A focus group was conducted with the middle school principals on October 15 and with the middle school review committee on October 19.
As part of our communication process, at the conclusion of each focus group activity—beginning with the middle school review committee focus group—members of each group will identify key points that they want to communicate to our stakeholders about the process. Following are those key points from the committee:
No preconceived notions.
Participants were encouraged to be honest and forthcoming.
Collaborative approach.
Not exactly the same as the middle school task force.
Clear timeline of the work—there is an end point.
The middle school review committee consists of a cross-section of people.
There is an objective 3rd party to facilitate the data gathering.
Liked the opening statement by Dr. John Gatta as the ground rules for the focus groups were given: "Statements should reflect looking to the future in a positive way."
As activities are completed, there will be additional updates.

Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day came early to Spring Trail this morning as we celebrated our first Veteran's Assembly. About 20 Veterans came together from our community to be honored by our students during an all school assembly, classroom visits, and a luncheon. It was a tremendous event-Thank you Veterans for all that you have done!!!

If you are paying for your lunch on Meal Pay Plus, the money needs to be put in the "General" category for your child to get milk only or extra milk.
If it is put in the "Meal" category it only allows your child to purchase a meal. You may also send in money to school, and we can apply it to your account.

Spring Trail's PTO and Teachers will be hosting Day at The Dogfather next Tuesday, October 9th. Spring Trail will earn 20% of the day's pre-tax purchases which will benefit technology and learning at our school. Please come out and support our goal, spend some time with your teachers and principal, and enjoy fantastic food selections! Dinner with the Principal and Staff begins at 4:30pm and will last thru dinnertime (6:30 pm).
